The following is a recap of Friday's activities.
The Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires ends their 2014 season at Sonoma Raceway with a doubleheader weekend that has one race on Saturday and one on Sunday.
Friday had the qualifying session and a last practice session for the race weekend and one of the championship contenders has an all-to-do for the first race of the weekend.
Jack Harvey won the pole and the bonus point for pole for the first race with a fastest lap of 1:28.121. Championship leader Gabby Chaves was second with a lap of 1:28.368. Third on the grid is Luiz Razia with Juan Piedrahita lining up fourth.
Zach Veach is second in points, but could only manage a seventh in qualifying with a lap of 1:28.893. This was only a slight downturn from the morning practice session where his fastest lap was a 1:28.858, which netted him sixth in practice.
The morning practice was a Belardi Auto Racing affair with Chaves on top of his new teammate for the weekend, Ryan Phinny. Chaves’s fastest lap was a 1:28.2705 and Phinny’s was a 1:28.4434. Harvey was third in the session and Razia was fourth.
Harvey could play a big spoiler role in the championship this weekend. With the bonus point for pole, he is now only 22 points behind Chaves. If Harvey wins the race, leads the most laps and puts in the race’s fastest lap, he’ll gain 52 points, so if Chaves finishes third, then Harvey will be only 5 points behind Chaves heading into the final race of the season on Sunday.
The Indy Lights race on Saturday will be at 12:15 in the afternoon Pacific time and will be 40 minutes in length. The race on Sunday will be at 11:00 in the morning Pacific time and will be an hour in length.
