Forsythe Championship Racing, Ltd. 1999 PPG-Dayton Indy Lights Championship

Texaco/Havoline Challenge Long Beach, California April 16-18, 1999

Circuit: 1.85-mile temporary street course Race: Laps - tba Broadcast: April 18 - ESPN2 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm EST

Saturday Final Qualifying:

1. Felipe Giaffone 67.668 = 97.038 mph
2. Guy Smith 68.003 = 96.560 mph
3. Didier Andre 68.025 = 96.529 mph
4. Philipp Peter 68.237 = 96.229 mph
5. Airton Dare 68.300 = 96.141 mph

Airton Dare, #1 Banestado Lola:

"The car was getting better and better. We still had some lap time to find, but I think we could have been closer to Guy and Didier's time. Unfortunately the session ended early. Geoff Boss was in the tire wall and the track was blocked. I tried to brake, but it was either hit him or go into the tires. I went into the tires and the red flag came out which ended our session. We had minor damage to the front wing and front suspension. Passing here is so difficult that it is going to be tough starting in fifth but I have a good car, so we'll see."

Guy Smith, #6 Swift Caravans Lola:

"We put new tires on quite late in the session which was a good strategy because we had a lighter fuel load. The car was getting faster and faster and better and better with each lap. The session ended early which was a bit unfortunate, but Felipe would have been difficult to beat. I think we could have improved our time a bit more, but I don't think I would have caught Felipe. You need to start on the front row at this track, so I'm pretty happy."
