European Formula 3 champion Felix Rosenqvist will test an Indy Lights car for Belardi Auto Racing at Miami-Homestead.
The first official Indy Lights test of 2016 will see Rosenqvist get his second taste of the series’ Dallara IL15-Mazda AER, when he joins series returnee Zach Veach at Belardi.
The 24-year-old Swede, who won 13 of the 33 Euro F3 rounds in 2015 driving for the Prema Powerteam, tested an Indy Lights car with Team Pelfrey at Palm Beach International Raceway at the end of last year.
Now he will try the 2.21-mile 14-turn road course on January 26-27, driving for the team that took Gabby Chaves to the Lights title in 2014.
Said team principal Brian Belardi: “We’re thrilled to have Felix in our second car alongside Zach for the Homestead test and we’re very keen on his running in Belardi red and white this season
“They both have race-winning pedigrees. Zach has in-depth knowledge of the Mazda Road To Indy venues, and he knows how to win. I know that first-hand, as we had to fight him all year to take the title in 2014.
“Felix is equally talented and has a well-developed understanding of the sport and the racecar. His resume speaks for itself."
Added Belardi: “If we can firm up this team, we’ll be gunning to bring the title back to Brownsburg, Indiana, at the end of 2016.”
Veach, who finished third in the 2014 Indy Lights championship, will be making his return to the series after a year spent fruitlessly pursuing an IndyCar seat. Belardi was impressed with his swift adaptation to the IL15, which was introduced during his enforced sabbatical.
Rosenqvist has spent the winter investigating his European as well as U.S. options. He tested GP2 cars for both Prema and also established squad Status Grand Prix. He will also start the Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona next week driving for Starworks.
