Short Race for Integra at Chicagoland
First lap accident ends the day early for Cunningham
Indianapolis, IN (6 September 08)-- The SunRichGourmet.com 100 came to a disappointingly early ending on Sunday at Chicagoland Speedway as Wade Cunningham was caught up in another car's accident on the first lap of the race. The contact prevented Cunningham from continuing the 67-lap event, as the damage was too severe for pit-lane repairs.
The season-finale event saw Cunningham make a quick move to avoid a spinning car on the opening lap, only to fall victim to a second spinning competitor just moments later.
"I missed the first spin no problem and then my spotter told me to go low and we were in the clear, but then another car spun right in front of me," said Cunningham. "There was nothing I could do. I was heading right at him and would have speared his car, so I just turned the car sideways at the last second so we made contact almost perfectly square. There was just too much damage to keep going. I feel badly for the team because we all wanted to close the year out with a good result but just had some bad luck at the start."
The team will decamp to the Integra Motorsports headquarters in Brownsburg, Indiana, and immediately get to work on a testing program to prepare for the 2009 season. Integra has attracted significant interest from a variety of interested drivers and will continue to finalize plans in the coming weeks.
