Texas rookie recap

The Firestone 600 is complete, so here's Christopher DeHarde to look at how the rookies performed.

Mikhail Aleshin - Start: 11th Finish: 7th

Aleshin was the highest finishing rookie at Texas. He earned a top ten result in just his second oval race, and had a good car to boot. He didn’t lounge around in the back and that suddenly show up at the end. Because he showed great improvement during the weekend, he’ll earn 4/5 from me for the weekend.

Jack Hawksworth - Start: 20th Finish: 15th

Hawksworth was near the back during the entire race. For a while, he was last of all the cars that were running, and only finished ahead of Saavedra and Huertas on track. Honestly, he didn’t really improve all weekend as he was 15th in the first practice and 14th in second practice. Considering the fact that he didn’t show any progress, I’m only going to give him a 2/5 for this weekend. Hopefully he can turn it around in time for Houston.

Carlos Huertas - Start: 22nd Finish: 16th

Huertas was somewhat competitive early in the race, pushing up into the top ten a couple of times, but he fell a lap down early. He ended up finishing behind Hawksworth and regressed as the weekend progressed. He was seventh after first practice, last in the second practice and started last as well. He’ll also earn 2/5 for this weekend since he had no improvement at all.

Carlos Munoz - Start: 10th Finish: 13th

Munoz was the highest finisher of the Andretti Autosport cars, but that wasn’t saying much since two of them had mechanical failures. He was the highest starting rookie, but couldn’t match Aleshin’s pace during the weekend. He was pretty much a mid-pack runner in practice and he spun on pit road during the race, so he’ll get a 3/5 for this weekend.

Review:

Aleshin: 4/5 Hawksworth: 2/5 Huertas: 2/5 Munoz: 3/5

Standings:

Aleshin: 24/40 Hawksworth: 24/40 Huertas: 22/40 Munoz: 23/40
