RAPHAEL MATOS AND DE FERRAN DRAGON RACING MATCHES SEASON BEST QUALIFYING EFFORT AT INDY GRAND PRIX OF SONOMA
Raphael Matos and the de Ferran Dragon Racing team continued to find improvements in the #2 HP car after each session and matched their season best by qualifying in the top 10 of the IZOD IndyCar Series Indy Grand Prix of Sonoma at Infineon Raceway.
Matos turned a fast lap speed of 107.156 on his last lap of the second qualifying session to finish 10th.
"We wanted to get into the top 10 so we achieved our objective," managing partner and team president Gil de Ferran said. "The times were very close, which makes you feel two ways. First, you're happy because you're close to the front. Then you're frustrated because you are so close yet so far. We can certainly have a good race from where we are. Let's see what tomorrow brings."
After the morning practice session the team made adjustments and improved the car for qualifying. Matos posted a 107.128 to finish sixth in the first qualifying group and advance to round two. He sat in fifth place midway through the second session before making the change to a fresh set of red tires. The times improved but not enough to advance into the "Fast Six".
"That was a tough session, very tight," Matos said. "We made some really good improvements, but didn't quite have enough to make it to the Fast Six. We needed to be a little quicker on the second set of reds, but it was a good qualifying effort. The team did a good job setting up for qualifying and now we hope to keep improving the car for the race tomorrow."
