For the second year in row, a Skip Barber trained driver wins the Indianapolis 500. Juan Montoya now adds a Borg Warner Trophy to his CART PPG Cup.

Like last year in the CART FedEx Series, the Skip Barber graduate and former Barber Pro Series driver won the '500' and felled a slew of records in the process. Montoya was never truly challenged in the race that circles the Brickyard's famous 2.5-mile four-turn oval 200 times. He led at one point in the early going by as much as 11 seconds. In winning the race, he becomes the first rookie to win it since the late two-time World Driving Champion Graham Hill did so in 1966. He established the record for most consecutive laps led by a rookie at 142 as well as most laps led overall by a rookie at 167.

Montoya's margin of victory was seven seconds, and in the process set the fastest lap of the race as well as the fourth fastest race time in the 84-year history of the event.
