IndyCar series owners appeared to quash rumors started last week about an impending series sale to a group of team owners in the series.

The Indianapolis Star asked nearly every team owner as to the veracity of a published report by Speedtv.com that had the owners banding together to buy the IZOD IndyCar Series. Every one of the owners polled denied any involvement in a purchase of the series, despite the fact that most of those same owners have been on the record expressing displeasure over some aspects of the series’ direction.

Most notably, higher-than-promised costs concerning parts on the new Dallara DW12 have caused angst among team owners, as has the television package that the new series leadership was saddled with. The television package with the NBC Sports Network has increased the hours of Indy Car coverage and also provides vital income for the series (as the series is not buying TV time as it was during its ESPN years), but has yielded miniscule viewership numbers.

Jeff Belskus, President and CEO of Hulman & Company, also denied any sale to the Star, calling the story “fictional” and saying that no sale had been discussed. To be fair, the earlier story on Speedtv.com never mentioned that a sale had been discussed with IndyCar management, so Belskus’ quote is a denial of a story that had never been reported.
