FORT WORTH, Texas (April 5, 2012) – Tennessee native Josef Newgarden completed his IZOD IndyCar Series rookie test today during two days of private testing at Texas Motor Speedway (TMS), Wednesday and Thursday, April 4-5.
His rookie test was completed on the second day of testing with Sarah Fisher Hartman Racing on the high-banks of TMS’ 1.5-mile, tri-oval speedway.
"We're just trying to get our time in so we're prepared when we come back in June," Newgarden said. "It's our first laps with the new car on ovals, and it's interesting to get the car to work on the high line here."
Newgarden competed on six oval tracks and won on three of them on his way to winning the 2011 Firestone Indy Lights championship. Texas Motor Speedway was not one of the ovals on the 2011 Firestone Indy Lights schedule, which made the laps Newgarden turned this week his first at TMS.
"It's a fun challenge to get the car to work right around here," Newgarden said. "You have to get the car working in all lanes, not just one of them."
The official Rookie Orientation Program for rookies of the Indianapolis 500 is scheduled for Thursday, May 10. Practice for the Indianapolis 500 begins on Saturday, May 12. The Indianapolis 500-Mile Race is Sunday, May 27.
After two IZOD IndyCar Series races in 2012, Newgarden is seventeenth in points with finishes of 11th and 17th at St. Petersburg and Birmingham, respectively.
Newgarden and the rest of the IZOD IndyCar Series drivers will return to Texas Motor Speedway for the Firestone 550 on Saturday night, June 9.
