FIRESTONE FIREHAWK FAST FACTS
IZOD IndyCar Series - Indy Japan 300
Twin Ring Motegi - Motegi, Japan
September 18-19, 2010 - Round 16 of 17
Firestone Firehawk Race Tires Supplied:
* Each entry receives eight sets (32 total tires) for the race weekend; total of 892 tires available.
* This Firestone Firehawk tire specification is unique to the Motegi event. The spec utilizes Firestone Racing's superspeedway (Texas, Kansas, Chicagoland) construction, paired with compounds that provide similar grip and wear levels to the tires used at the Indy 500. Firestone Racing engineers have determined this to be the best compromise for the unique, egg-shaped Twin Ring Motegi track.
From Al Speyer, Executive Director, Firestone Racing: "Firestone Racing always eagerly anticipates the Indy Japan 300 each year, as it affords us the opportunity to see our colleagues from Bridgestone Japan. Now that the race has been moved from spring to late in the season, it has really taken on new significance in the schedule. We are looking forward to seeing the IZOD IndyCar Series crown its first recipient of the A.J. Foyt Oval Championship Trophy at Motegi, and of course everyone is keeping a close eye on the season championship points in this penultimate race. As has been the case so often this season, Firestone Racing engineers are bringing a completely unique tire specification to Motegi. After two consecutive races using the same superspeedway tire (Chicagoland and Kentucky speedways), drivers will be racing on a totally different Firestone Firehawk spec this weekend. Motegi's relatively flat, egg-shaped design presents a challenge to our engineers. But pairing our race-proven superspeedway construction with compounds similar to our highly-complimented Indy 500 tires should provide drivers with the grip and durability they need."
Firestone "Tire-ific" Move of the Race: Following each IZOD IndyCar Series race in 2010, Firestone Racing nominates three drivers who best utilized their Firestone tires to make a bold, dramatic move during the event. Fans can go to www.indycar.com in the days after the race and vote for the nominee they believe made the most "Tire-ific" move of the race, with the top vote-getter earning the honor. The $10,000 prize from the September 4 event at Kentucky Speedway goes to Helio Castroneves, for gambling on an off-sequence pit strategy to score a victory. Helio will receive his check in pre-race ceremonies Sunday afternoon.
