The Novo Nordisk Chip Ganassi Racing team rolled-off 21st for the 250-lap race from the inside of row 11. The first caution period fell early at the historic one-mile oval on lap 20 for a spun car in turn four. As pit lane opened, the No. 83 team took advantage of the break to pit for fresh tires, fuel and a tire-pressure adjustment on lap 23.

Kimball gained four spots from his starting position and made his way to 17th through the first quarter of the race. As the race hit its 67-lap mark, the pit stop cycle moved the No. 83 Honda up to sixth position.

Kimball spent a total of 25 laps in the top-10 until heading in for his second pit of the race on lap 92, where an extended stop caused him to fall off the lead lap. With a second yellow flag on lap 98, the majority of the 24-car field came to pit lane including the NovoLog FlexPen car to top-off on fuel.

As Kimball reported handling issues in turns two and four, the team took to pit road from 15th position to take tires, fuel and a tire pressure adjustment on lap 170. With 45 laps remaining, the team made its final pit stop of the race from 16th including a half-turn of front wing. The No. 83 exited pit lane in 17th position – the only car on its lap – where it spent the remainder of the race until eventually crossing the finish line.

With the result in Round 9, Kimball moved from 11th to 13th in the IZOD IndyCar Series point standings with 175 markers, -124 points behind leader Helio Castroneves.

Honda is second in the manufacturer point standings with 63 points, trailing Chevrolet with 72.
