Carpenter Claims Kentucky Pole

Ed Carpenter, who led 35 laps of last year's Miejer Indy 300 but lost the race to Ryan Briscoe by just 16 thousandths of a second, was the surprise pole qualifier Friday at Kentucky Speedway, despite running only a part-time schedule in the 2010 IZOD IndyCar Series.

Making only his third start of the season, Carpenter edged championship leader Will Power to claim his first career IndyCar pole, with Panther Racing teammate Dan Wheldon qualifying third. Scott Dixon, winner here in 2008, posted the fourth-fastest qualifying run with Hideki Mutoh rounding out the top five, in his strongest qualifying effort since starting fourth at Kansas Speedway in May. Saturday night's Meijer Indy 300 starts at 8:30 p.m. EDT, with live television coverage on Versus.

Ed Carpenter (#20 Panther Racing Honda) pole qualifier, his 1st IZOD IndyCar Series pole: "Yeah, I'm pretty happy right now, but it's all about [winning] tomorrow night. Obviously, we hit the setup just right, and I knew after [teammate] Dan [Wheldon]'s run that we had a good shot at the pole. It was a tough qualifying run, hotter and windier than this morning [practice]. But winning the pole definitely takes our confidence up to the next level."
