FIRESTONE FIREHAWK FAST FACTS
IndyCar Series - Meijer Indy 300
Kentucky Speedway - Sparta, Ky.
August 8-9, 2008 - Round 14 of 18
Race Distance: 300 miles/482.803 km (200 laps on the 1.5-mile/2.4-km superspeedway).
Television/Radio Broadcast: Live - Saturday, Aug. 9, at 6:30 p.m. EDT on ESPN2, IMS Radio Network and XM Radio Channels 144 and 145.
Firestone Firehawk Race Tires Supplied:
* 1,008 dry-condition slicks; each car/entry receives eight sets (32 tires) for the two-day weekend.
* Tire stagger, molding the right rear tire with a slightly larger diameter than the left rear to help cars turn more smoothly on ovals, will be approximately 0.45 of an inch for Kentucky Speedway.
Firestone Racing engineers have designed a new tire specification for this weekend's race. The latest generation Firehawk was developed from tire testing in June at Chicagoland Speedway. The new spec features the same tire construction as used earlier this season at similar 1.5-mile ovals (Homestead-Miami, Kansas and Texas), paired with an updated tread compound designed to add grip at all four tire positions. This new spec is slated for use again at Chicagoland in September.
From Al Speyer, Executive Director, Firestone Racing: "After a welcome weekend off, it's time for the stretch run to the championship with four races in five weeks. We kick it off at Kentucky Speedway, another of the mile-and-a-half ovals that promotes the intense, tire-to-tire racing for which the IndyCar Series is known. Firestone is bringing a new tire to Kentucky that is expected to increase grip and ratchet up the excitement another notch or two. IndyCar Series teams and drivers have relied on Firestone to provide reliable and race-worthy tires since the first event in 1996. We take great pride in that trust and take quite seriously the responsibility to continue developing those trustworthy race tires."
Firestone "Tire-ific" Move of the Race: This $10,000 prize is awarded after each IndyCar Series race to the driver who best utilizes his or her Firestone tires to make a bold, dramatic move during the event. It could be relying on the Firehawks' great grip to execute a daring pass, or having the confidence in the tires' durability to run an extra stint on a set to improve position. After each race, Firestone Racing submits the top three "Tire-ific" candidates to www.indycar.com, where fans cast their votes during the ensuing week to determine the winner. The "Tire-ific" recipient from the July 26 race at Edmonton (Scott Dixon, Tony Kanaan and Paul Tracy are nominated) will be named in pre-race ceremonies Saturday evening.
