Justin and Dale Coyne Racing have put last Saturday’s Milwaukee retirement behind them and are looking ahead to this weekend’s Iowa Corn Indy 250 at Iowa Speedway. Justin tested the #18 Sonny’s Bar-B-Q Honda at the 7/8th of a mile oval the week before last and came away enthusiastic about the car’s handling and the team’s prospects for this weekend.

As at all of the ovals this year, INDYCAR have taken a close look at the aero package for the new DW12. Following the recent test, the technical bulletin sent to teams for this event will see a reduction in available downforce of about 8-9 per cent in an attempt to put greater emphasis on driver skill and to avoid the cars running flat out throughout the race.

The lower downforce aero package won’t be the only change for this event. Oval qualifying outside of the Indy 500 has traditionally involved two timed laps by each driver, but INDYCAR are keen to experiment with new formats and this weekend will see the use of three heat races to set the starting grid for the 250 lap race. Further details on Friday’s qualifying format are provided below.

“Iowa’s a fun track,” said Justin. “It’s difficult to get the car working well here and it’s very physical, but I’m looking forward to it. I think the heat races will be fun and add something different. We had a good test here with the Sonny’s Bar-B-Q Honda 10 days ago and hopefully we’ll be strong here like we’ve been at all the ovals so far this year.”
