Justin Wilson gets back behind the wheel with no plans after Indy

INDIANAPOLIS - As is the case every May, there are a number of drivers who show up for the 500, but aren't taking part in the rest of the season.

One such driver is Justin Wilson, who will pilot the No. 25 Andretti Autorsport Honda. The 36-year-old British racing driver has a two-race deal with the team, the GP where he finished 24th due to gearbox issues and of course, the 500.

"It's been really frustrating to not be in the car, but it is great to be back," said Wilson.

How did this deal come about?

He explained to Motorsport.com that he's been in talks with Michael Andretti for some time now as they tried to put some kind of deal together for 2015. "It's something we've been working on for a while, since late last year. Once James had left to go race for Sam Schmidt, there was an opportunity here, provided they could find the funding. Obviously, that's the hard part."

"There's been times during the offseason where it was looking good and didn't fall through, looking good and then it didn't fall through again. Michael ended up saying to me, 'I have a deal for two races, the GP and the 500. Do you want to do it?'

"That's how it all came about and it's been great to work with Ryan, Marco, Carlos, and Simona."

Different feel with new aero kits? Not really...

This is also the first time Wilson, who has over 100 IndyCar starts, has been able to try out the new aero kits, but the change in feel is miniscule.

"I don't fell a lot of difference, just a little more drag than before. The car is a little more sensitive. It's like trying to balance on a ball. You got to try to push it hard without unsettling it. Other than that, it's very similar."

"I like the way it feels, but there's plenty more tweaking to be done. There's still a lot to learn and develop throughout practice."

"I really don't know (if it was a good idea to implement aero kits)," said Wilson. "You'd have to ask is it good for the fans, does it bring in more fans? That's the main thing. Now I'm not the one with the stats, it would have to be whoever has that information."

No plans after Indy

As for his future racing activites in 2015, Wilson doesn't have anything planned on the open-wheel or sports car side (ran with Michael Shank in Sebring 12 Hours), stating, "It all depends on sponsorship but so far, there is nothing in the works."

As for bridging the gap to Chevrolet and contending for the win next weekend, Wilson's strategy is simple.
 
"We just have to go out there and try to run our perfect race."
