IZOD IndyCar has yet to confirm a race in 2013 in Italy. The first rumor came from the Repubblica, an Italian news agency. Today, Autosport magazine stated that the series will “host its first race in Italy next year”, and they named two circuits whereas before it appeared to be only Monza.
Ferrari’s home track in Imola still appears to be the first choice, but now Mugello is apparently being considered. The apparent confirmation was released to Autosport by the spokesman for the organizing committee, Dr. Paola Mannetti who claimed the agreement is for a weekend in September.
I don't think we'd want to rush another race for 2013.
Earlier rumors had the Italian race set for the season finale. If that was the case, then the American-based open-wheel racing series would have to adjust its 2013 schedule. Currently a double-header (one race with a rolling start and one with a standing start) would need to be moved as the street circuit event in Houston, Texas, is to take place on October 5-6.
If there is an event in Italy next year, it would have in September if the IndyCar teams head to Europe. Baltimore’s street race will be held on September 1st.
Looking at the schedule for Monza next year, the circuit will host Formula One on the 8th of September.
IndyCar has yet to release a statement regarding a race in Italy, or for the newest possible addition: Rhode Island. When the 2013 schedule was released, Randy Bernard stated: “We've selected 16 great races. I don't think we'd want to rush another race for 2013.”
Actually the series will contest 19 races since three of the venues: Detroit, Toronto, and Houston are the doubleheaders. The actual season finale will again be in Fontana, CA.
The rumors of a race in Italy are just that at this time. Until IndyCar and the Italian organization have the traditional handshake, the idea of a race next year in Italy is just a rumor! Perhaps for some it is wishful thinking!
