ROOKIE CALKINS FASTEST OF DAY IN WDWS TESTING
LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla., January 16, 1996 -- Rookie Buzz Calkins was the fastest among six drivers testing today at Walt Disney World Speedway in preparation for the Jan. 27 Indy 200 at Walt Disney World Presented by Aurora live on ABC Sports.
Calkins took just 20 laps Monday at the end of the day to shake down the Bradley Motorsports entry before two full days of testing. The best lap of yesterday's routine "shakedown" was a healthy 20.368 seconds, 176.750 miles per hour. Today, he clocked in with a fast lap of 19.950 seconds, 180.451 miles per hour.
He said his quick early speed has pushed the new program along.
"That's what's kind of nice," he said. "We're pretty comfortable so we can concentrate on the other stuff. It gives you more confidence."
Calkins was asked in mid-afternoon if he would be ready if the green dropped for the Indy 200 at Walt Disney World in the next 10 minutes.
"If they gave us one more session, then the green," he replied. "If we had to do it right now, we could."
A.J. Foyt spent his 61st birthday today at Walt Disney World working with both of his drivers, Davey Hamilton and Scott Sharp.
Scott Sharp, about driving for A.J. Foyt: "It's fantastic. What's so amazing working with A.J. is that you're dealing with a guy who is the team owner and my engineer, but also really knows what's going on. He knew every bump in the track (at Indianapolis). He knew so much about the driving portion as well as the setup part. He tells you what the car is doing before you give him feedback. The types of changes we'd make...if we'd make 10 changes, nine would be positive and that's unheard of."
Update on driver Butch Brickell, who suffered two broken vertebrae in his neck in an accident at Walt Disney World Speedway Jan. 13: He has been upgraded to stable condition and has been moved to a regular hospital room from the intensive care unit, according to Joe Brown, spokesman for Orlando Regional Medical Center.
