LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. - On race eve at Walt Disney World
Race fans in general accepted Friday's near all day rain with mild resignation, at least those faithful who stayed for the scant 45 minutes of practice time remaining between the time the track was dried to race conditions and darkness crept over the speedway.
With qualifying canceled at 2:00 PM due to rain for the first time in IRL history the first 20 positions were determined by '96-'97 entrant points and the remaining eight went to top practice times from Thursday. The weather conditions did cause disappointment for Billy Roe, Jim Guthrie, and Affonso Giaffone who had no points and weren't fast enough in practice to make the cut.
Practice was terminated shortly after 5:00 PM when Jimmy Kite spun the Scandia #7 off turn three and hit the inside wall with the car's left side. The incident was most watched by IRL officials and the transmission builder for it was the first live test of joint efforts to soften the rear ends to produce greater energy absorption in event of a rear end crash. Kite's rear end was bent about 12 degrees to the right and the car was replaced by the Scandia #7T backup machine
There are two formers winners of this event in the starting field, Buzz Calkins (1996) and Eddie Cheever, Jr., (1997) Rookies starting Saturday are Kenny Brack, Billy Boat, Jimmy Kite, Raul Boesel, Robbie Groff, Brian Tyler, Greg Ray, Sam Schmidt, Mark Dismore, Eliseo Salazar, and Tyce Carlson.
