COUNTDOWN BEGINS TO INDY 200 AT WALT DISNEY WORLD
INDIANAPOLIS, Jan. 4, 1996 -- As the countdown begins in earnest for the inaugural Indy 200 at Walt Disney World Jan. 25-27, here are some of the normal "details of the drill." If IRL or Speedway information has been reaching you on an inconvenient fax, please call the Indianapolis Motor Speedway public relations office at (317) 484-6780 to make changes. *** TESTING REPORTS: Jan Shaffer of the Speedway press crew and Indy Racing League staff will be on hand at Walt Disney World Speedway to provide daily news, quotes and updates and assist with media requests and interview scheduling as IRL testing resumes next week at the world's newest superspeedway. Starting Monday, Jan. 8, Shaffer can be reached at (407) 939-0501 or 939-0502, fax (407) 939-0503.
TESTING SESSIONS: Are open to the media (with prior notice) at the option of the race teams and tire companies which have reserved the track. Please call Shaffer in advance to arrange for testing-day credentials.
DATELINE: Walt Disney World Speedway is in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.
CREDENTIALS: Media credential requests should be made in writing to Indy 200 Media Credentials, Indianapolis Motor Speedway, 4790 W. 16th Street, Indianapolis, IN 46222 as soon as possible. For media credential information, call (317) 484-6500.
PRESS FACILITY, HOTEL: The press facility at WDW Speedway will be located on the inside of the one-mile oval behind the center of the IRL paddock. The press hotel for the race will be the Polynesian on the Disney World grounds. Media may contact the IMS public relations office for further information. For those of you who are veterans of covering the Indianapolis 500, you'll find some familiar faces in the press room. Bill York will serve as press room manager at Disney World along with members of the regular Public Relations, Press Room and Trackside Report staffs from Indianapolis.
MEDIA DAY: Slated for Wednesday, Jan. 24, 1996, Oldsmobile will sponsor this pre-event media advance day and luncheon. Several competitors and officials will be available for interviews. The facility is not open to the public on Media Day.
RACE EVENT SCHEDULE: On Thursday, Jan. 25, IRL group practices are scheduled along with Formula 2000 qualifications. Indy 200 qualifications and the Formula 2000 race will be held Friday afternoon, Jan. 26, along with an IRL qualifying race for the Indy 200, if necessary. Opening ceremonies are scheduled at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 27, with the inaugural Indy 200 at Walt Disney World set for 12:30 p.m. (EST). ABC Sports television and the IMS Radio Network will air the race live.
INTERNET INFORMATION: Daily IRL information will be "up" on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway's Internet website (http://www.brickyard.com) by late afternoon. Also on the website as you read this: The IRL and Speedway offices, as expected, have received many calls and requests for information about the IRL's first season, qualifying procedures, schedules,etc. In order to put some myths to rest, we've put some of the most frequent ones together with factual explanations in a piece entitled "Fiction and Fact." You may use any of it as desired.
