VISION RACING FINISHES RACE , SHOWS IMPROVEMENT AND GAINS VALUABLE EXPERIENCE
WATKINS GLEN, New York -- Vision Racing driver, Ed Carpenter, not only completed his objectives for the Watkins Glen Indy Grand Prix presented by Argent Mortgage, but he also showed much improvement with his road racing ability throughout the course of the affair. In doing so, Carpenter recorded his best road course finish, 14th, in just his third road course start in the Indy Racing League Indy Car Series. The 14th place finish also marks the team's best road course finish since forming just before the start of the 2005 season.
The Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg in March saw Carpenter finish 19th due to contact and the Argent Mortgage Indy Grand Prix at Infineon Raceway in August faired better for Carpenter as he finished the race in 15th position. This set up what would be the extent of Carpenter's IndyCar Series road course racing, but with the odds stacked against him from an experience standpoint, Carpenter still showed much improvement following his stint at the historic Watkins Glen International.
After a weekend with ever-changing weather conditions, coupled with road racing inexperience, Carpenter and crew had their work cut-out for them, but they not only held on to finish, but moved through the field, pressured competitors, ran competitive lap times and put together a complete race. In fact, Carpenter was able to record his fastest lap of the weekend on lap 24 with a speed of 126.909 mph.
Carpenter finished just one lap down from the leaders and Scott Dixon of Target Chip Ganassi Racing who one the inaugural event. The IndyCar Series schedule continues Sunday, Oct. 16, from California Speedway. ESPN will provide live coverage of the 200 lap/400 mile event beginning at 3:30 p.m. (EDT).
Ed Carpenter, #20 Dallara/Toyota/Firestone:
On the Watkins Glen Indy Grand Prix presented by Argent Mortgage:
"The conditions this weekend were kind of all over the place and they were giving me fits. We didn't really see the same track conditions until today. This is kind of like how it was at the end of the second session on Friday afternoon. So, we started the race and the car felt pretty good and then finally got into a rhythm and we started running some pretty good lap times. I was able to go out and get some experience and everything is feeling better. I was able to run better than some of the guys who are pretty good veterans. But, the second set of tires we had never felt as good and it was giving me a little bit of grief. Yet, at the same time, it was a really good race and I'm really happy. I'm happy with the team, happy with car, and most of all happy with the progress that I am making with road racing. I feel like I'm getting better every time so one of these days I'll be able to hold my own for sure."
