THE GLEN RECEIVES NEW INDYCAR SERIES DATE
Race Weekend to Follow 4th of July
Watkins Glen, NY (September 19, 2006) -- Watkins Glen International President Craig Rust announced today that the track's annual IndyCar Series race will move to Sunday, July 8 in 2007. Rust feels good about maintaining this date on the calendar as an annual event weekend in the future.
"The 4th of July weekend has always been one of our preferred choices for the IndyCar Series weekend," stated Rust. "We are thrilled to have worked with Kansas Speedway and the Indy Racing League on the new date and hope that it will become a holiday tradition that our fans can enjoy with their families for year's to come." The track is already busy preparing fan activities throughout the new July weekend including a large display of fireworks to celebrate Independence Day at the New York State race track.
"We are pleased to give Craig Rust and his staff at Watkins Glen International a date they have long preferred and thank him for his flexibility the past couple of years," stated Brian Barnhart, President and Chief Operating Officer of the Indy Racing League. "In just two years The Glen has quickly become an anticipated race on the IndyCar Series schedule and we look forward to building on not only the track but the region's open-wheel racing legacy."
On September 25th, 2005 the IndyCar Series returned to The Glen for their inaugural race. The community and region rallied behind the return of open-wheel racing to Watkins Glen International after a 25 year absence.
"Based on the track's heritage and the feedback that we continue to receive from our open-wheel race fans, we are confident that this new date can make our event a premier race weekend on the IndyCar Series schedule," added Rust. "There is no better place to visit in July than this region." Watkins Glen International is located in the heart of the popular Finger Lakes Wine Country and is considered a premier summertime destination for regional travelers.
The entire 2007 schedule was also announced today and includes the return of the 26th running of the Sahlen's Six Hours of The Glen, Rolex Sports Car Series as a stand alone weekend, June 8-10.
