VINELAND, N.J., April 22 - Residents of Vineland, N.J., and surrounding communities plan to send hometown hero and Indy car driver Jeret Schroeder off to the Indianapolis 500 in fine style at an "Indy 500 Bash" on Thursday, May 4 at the East Side Cafe, 1931 South Lincoln Ave. in Vineland.
The party will start at 8 p.m.
The event is open to the public and no invitation is necessary. There is no cover charge, but fans must be 21 to attend and proper identification is required.
Schroeder will sign autographs from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. Door prizes, T-shirts and a free buffet will be available, and entertainment will be provided by disc jockey Jimmy Mack. Tricycle races are also planned.
Last May Schroeder became the first New Jersey resident to make the field for the Indy 500 in 16 years when he qualified for the 83rd annual Memorial Day Classic at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, the world's largest single-day sporting event. He was running in the top 10 until his engine blew just 25 laps from the finish, but he still finished an impressive 15th in his first appearance in the world's most famous auto race.
This year Schroeder is the lead driver for Tri Star Motorsports, which has entered a 2000 Dallara Aurora sponsored by Armour Swift-Eckrich and tristarmall.com for Schroeder to drive at Indy. Qualifications will be held May 20-21 and the race, which will be broadcast live on ABC, is Sunday, May 28. Practice begins Saturday, May 13.
The 30-year-old is currently leading the Rookie of the Year point standings in the Indy Racing Northern Light series, and he finished fourth in Saturday's Vegas Indy 300 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
