FORT WORTH-DALLAS (May 3, 2004) -- Indy Racing League IndyCar Series races at Texas Motor Speedway are known for intense competition and thrilling finishes. Can the racing in the June 12 Bombardier 500k get closer than in the past? Series point runnerup Tony Kanaan thinks so.

Three Indy Racing League IndyCar Series veterans invaded Texas Motor Speedway Monday for a Firestone tire test that will help formulate new series rules and regulations for the Bombardier 500k at "The Great American Speedway."

Kanaan, defending series champion Scott Dixon and Tomas Scheckter participated in the day-long, incident-free test. Indy Racing League officials present were also gathering information to assist in formulating superspeedway aerodynamic rules that will be used to slow the cars in the Bombardier 500k. The new rules include a reduction in engine size from 3.5 liters to 3.0 liters.

Kanaan wheeled his 7-Eleven Dallara/Honda of Andretti Green Racing during the session while Dixon was aboard the Target Chip Ganassi Racing Panoz G Force/Toyota. Scheckter's test in the Pennzoil Panther Dallara/Chevrolet ended at midday with bodywork problems that couldn't be repaired at the speedway.

"I don't think it can get closer than what it has been," exclaimed Kanaan. "I think with the new wing configurations, you are going to see a tight field. Some people are going to have to drive their cars a lot more, it is going to include more driver and engineer input.

"I think the reduction will be around 10 to 12 miles per hour. We saw 221 mph here last year, we are going to see speeds around 210 mph for the June race."

Kanaan and Dixon will continue the Firestone tire test Tuesday at the speedway. All test sessions are closed to the public.

Tickets to the Bombardier 500k are on sale daily at the speedway, by calling (817) 215-8500, online at www.texasmotorspeedway.com and at Ticketmaster locations.
