DRIVERS HEAD TO TEXAS MOTOR SPEEDWAY FOR TESTING
FORT WORTH-DALLAS (Nov. 25, 1998) - The 1998 season has come to a close and already teams are gearing up for 1999.
Both Firestone and Goodyear are scheduled to test during the first two weeks of December with drivers such as NASCAR Winston Cup driver Jeff Burton and Greg Ray of the Pep Boys Indy Racing League. The Indy Racing League will also hold a two-day test for five potential new drivers for the IRL.
The following is the current testing schedule at Texas Motor Speedway. All tests are closed to the public.
DEC. 1-2 / FIRESTONE - Plano, Texas native Greg Ray will be testing two days for Firestone tires. This will be Ray's first test since he signed with Team Menard in October. Menard has announced the team will run with one car for 1999.
DEC. 3-4 / IRL ROOKIE TESTING - The Pep Boys Indy Racing League will conduct testing for five potential drivers for the league. Three-time Indy 500 winner Johnny Rutherford and current IRL driver Scott Goodyear will be working with the drivers to test them for their IRL licenses. Scheduled to participate are: Ryan Newman, USAC Silver Crown; Tony Elliott, USAC Sprint Cars; Jay Drake, USAC Midgets; and Jac Haudenshild and Greg Hodnett of the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series.
DEC. 8-9 / GOODYEAR - NASCAR Winston Cup driver Jeff Burton will be on the speedway testing for Goodyear. Burton, who won the inaugural Winston Cup event at Texas in 1997, will be the first Cup driver to run full speed on the reconfigured speedway.
