Pagan Racing Longhorn 500 presented by MCI Worldcom June 12, 1999 Post Race Notes & Quotes
Driver: Jeff Ward
Car: Pagan Racing No. 21 Dallara/Aurora/Goodyear
Finished - 18th
Jeff Ward finished 18th this evening after his right rear wheel bearing broke on his Yahoo! / MerchantOnline.com / Pagan Racing Dallara. The crew brought the car in for inspection after Ward reported a loose handling condition. After checking the tires and suspension on lap 119, the car was returned to the Speedway. Ward drove one lap before the car returned to the pits for further inspection.
After replacing the broken parts the car returned to competition in 20th position, thirty two laps down. Ward picked up two positions passing the stopped cars of Jacques Lazier and Robby McGehee to finish 18th.
Jeff Ward led the race once for seven laps (laps 94-100)
Jeff Ward Quotes - "When it went loose, it went loose big time. I almost lost it. Up until the wheel bearing broke the car was perfect." (on losing the points lead) "We'll get it back. It was just one of those races."
Mitch Davis, crew chief - "The right rear wheel bearing broke. We never had that happen. In ten years, I've never seen that happen. It's usually the ball bearing that goes bad. It wasn't the ball bearing that went bad, it was the roller bearing that went bad." (on sending Ward back out 32 laps down) "You can't give up. We're here to win the championship. Things like that happen. It could happen to a brand new car. You have to have the time to stop and check everything and make sure everything is 100 percent. Indy was two weeks ago. We had two cars ready to race here. There's no time to blueprint these cars from end to end. We magnaflux everything for cracks, but this wasn't a crack.
