Disappointing Finish To Encouraging Day at TMS
What was once thought to be a conservative approach to the day, all went for naught. Ed Qualified 22nd in the twenty-two car field with the best lap being 213.823 mph, which was considerably slower than today's practice times. "Something happened to the brake," said Ed. The brakes decided to take over, but we've had a good car so far this weekend, so we'll just have to make the race car that much better."
Team owner Paul Diatlovich expressed his disappointment. "We don't know went wrong just yet, but the guys are looking the car over as we speak,'' said Paul. "We felt we had approached the day properly, and something obviously went wrong with the car. We are very disappointed for Ed and for Metabolife Ultra. We will correct the problem, and be strong for the race."
The team will continue working on the car this evening, which will include an engine change.
Team Prepares For Qualification
The second and final practice session before qualifying was utilized in preparation for Sunday's Chevy 500. Ed improved his previous speed, with a lap at 220.053 mph. "We have a very good race car," said Ed. "We aren't throwing any major qualifying set up on the car, so we feel really good about this practice session, and about the race.
Qualifying for the Chevy 500 will be ^:30 this evening. The Chevy 500 can be seen Sunday, October 12th at 3:30 (EDT) on ESPN.
Carpenter 13th Quick in Opening Session
PDM Racing driver Ed Carpenter took to the 1.5 mile Texas Motor Speedway this afternoon for the opening practice session. Ed ran a total of forty two laps, with the best being a lap of 219.795 mph in the Metabolife Ultra #18 PDM Racing Dallara. "We don't get a lot of practice time leading into today's qualifying, so we are working with our race set up during practice," said Team Owner Paul Diatlovich.
Carpenter, who also will be competing in the Menards Infiniti Pro™ Series event this weekend, was the third quickest Chevy powered car during the session. "The car feels really good, and I was able to run with traffic really well," said Ed. "Qualifying my not dictate how good the car is."
