It's been close, but no cigar for Red Bull Cheever Racing at Texas.

Dating back to 1997 the team has had many strong runs at the 1.5-mile Texas Motor Speedway, but never a victory. The team's best finish came in Oct. 2000 when Eddie Cheever Jr. finished second by only one-tenth of a second.

In the last race at Texas the team qualified on the front row with Tomas Scheckter and Eddie Cheever starting side-by-side. Scheckter led over half the June race, and had a one second lead, before a stall in the final pit stop took him out of contention. Cheever had the fastest lap of the race but was out after an accident on lap 127.

Red Bull Cheever Racing returns to Texas with a new rookie driver Buddy Rice, who has led two of his four races for the team since joining in late July. Rice has also set a season record in finishes for the team completing every lap of his first four IRL races. Eddie Cheever Jr. returns for his 11th run at Texas Motor Speedway.

This season Red Bull Cheever Racing has won one race, the Michigan Indy 400, and four pole positions at California, Texas, Kansas, and Michigan.

Eddie Cheever Jr. on Texas:
"The Red Bull team is continuing a streak of putting cars back in the transporter in one piece and accumulating points. Ninety percent of the race at Chicagoland was the best I've seen. So many drivers had the possibility of winning. In the front pack of five cars, in the final laps, there was the current IRL champion, two two-time Indy 500 winners and two one-time Indy 500 winners. It was great to be a part of that group racing each other in an area of about 20 yards. I had a lot of fun.

"Going into Texas, I sincerely hope the IRL takes a very firm stance on all of the drivers that were blocking in Joliet. Every driver going to Texas, regardless of what team they drive for, has to understand clearly that the rules apply to everybody."

Buddy Rice on Texas:
"I am looking forward to going to Texas. I hope we can get another strong finish for Red Bull Cheever Racing to set us up well for next year. Texas is known for its exciting racing which is why I can't wait to get there and drive it for the first time."

Flashback: Cheever's History at Texas Motor Speedway
From 1997 to 2002, Eddie Cheever Jr. raced in ten IRL events at the 1.5-mile Texas Motor Speedway. He led five of ten races at the speedway known for its drafting and close racing. He finished in the top ten four times.

"I couldn't think of a better place than Texas Motor Speedway to finish out the championship. After every Texas race I get out of the car completely drained, both physically and mentally. If you look at the spectators after the race they look almost as tired as us drivers from standing up in their seats for the entire race. This is another race I really want to win!"
