Honda drivers ready for Texas night action

Following evening qualifying on Thursday, a pair of practice sessions at Texas Motor Speedway completed IndyCar Series preparations for Honda-powered drivers and teams at the Bombadier 500, the first Saturday night race of the 2003 IRL season.

With the complete 22-car starting field running together, speeds at the final 30-minute practice were significantly faster than qualifying, with Bryan Herta leading the Honda contingent, fourth quickest at 218.946 miles per hour. Felipe Giaffone, driving for Mo Nunn Racing, led the field with a speed of 220.574 mph.

Today's practice sessions were the final IRL IndyCar Series on-track activities until the start of Saturday night's Bombardier 500. The 200-lap race starts at 8 p.m. EDT, with live television coverage on ESPN.

Bryan Herta (#27 Archipelago/Motorola/Andretti Green Racing Honda) fourth fastest today: "We only made a couple of very small changes today, and I was real happy with the car. It's running great in clean air and we're ready for the race. This last [practice] session was the first time we ran with everyone else on the track, and it's going to be a close, exciting race. It's going to require some 'give and take' on the part of everyone out there and I'm looking forward to it."
