Foyts add a firehawk to their racing memorabilia
JUSTIN, Texas (June 6, 2003) - At Texas Motor Speedway today, the Firestone Racing program presented A.J. Foyt Jr. and A.J. Foyt IV one of the Firestone Firehawk racing radials that was on the younger Foyt's car when he clinched the 2002 Indy Racing League Infiniti Pro Series Championship.
The team-owning grandfather and racecar-driving grandson proved to be a dynamic duo last year, earning four poles and winning four races on the way to the inaugural season title, captured Sept. 15 at Texas Motor Speedway. After earning the Firehawk Cup, A.J. Foyt IV landed a 2003 IRL IndyCar ride with A.J. Foyt Enterprises, preserving the successful pairing. This year - as last - all cars in the IndyCar and Infiniti Pro Series compete on Firestone Firehawk tires.
"It was an honor for us to be a part of the Foyt championship effort last year," said Firestone Racing Executive Director Al Speyer. "Facing some very talented competition on the track and on pit row, the Foyts proved why they are a force to be reckoned with every race day. Great driving, a skillfully prepared car and sound advice on the headsets contributed to the 2002 championship. We were pleased when both Foyts thanked Firestone Racing for our efforts supporting their success, and wanted to present this tire to express our pride in providing tires and service up to their standards."
The Foyts and Firestone trace their relationship back more than four decades, with the elder Foyt claiming two Indianapolis 500 mile race victories on Firestone tires (1961, 1964).
"My grandson winning his first championship on Firestone tires brings back a lot of good memories because I won my first Indy car championship on Firestone tires in 1960," said Foyt.
