Bryan Herta fourth in final practice at Texas

FT. WORTH, Texas (June 6, 2003) -- Bryan Herta showed some speed today at Texas Motor Speedway, posting the fourth fastest time of the day in the #27 Archipelago/Motorola Dallara/Honda/Firestone. Herta lapped the 1.5-mile oval at 218.900 miles per hour (23.9287 seconds).

Herta, who is subbing for the injured Dario Franchitti, continued to work on the Archipelago/Motorola car's race balance. The team found they have a good starting setup and continued to make small tweaks to improve the car. Herta will start ninth in tomorrow night's Bombardier 500k.

Felipe Giaffone was the quickest in today's practice sessions, logging a best lap at 220.574 miles per hour (23.7471 seconds). He was followed by his teammate Tora Takagi who lapped the 1.5-mile speedway at 219.916 miles per hour. Pole-sitter Scott Dixon rounded out the top three with a best speed of 219.471 miles per hour (23.8665 seconds.) Herta's teammate Dan Wheldon was seventh fastest with a lap at 218.643 miles per hour. Tony Kanaan was ninth quick with a best speed of 217.884 miles per hour.

The Bombardier 500k will be broadcast live tomorrow on ESPN with the green flag scheduled to fly at 8:21 p.m. (EDT). ESPN2 will broadcast a pre-race show at 12 p.m. (EDT).

Bryan Herta #27 Archipelago/Motorola Dallara/Honda/Firestone

"All I know about this race is what I've seen on TV. I think it is going to be a little crazy and I think it is going to be really important to keep your nose clean. I know the Archipelago/Motorola car will be competitive and we just need to make sure we are there at the end of the race. Our goal today was to try and make the car as comfortable as we could in traffic because I doubt anyone is going to get any clear laps out there."

Kyle Moyer, Team Manager, Archipelago/Motorola

"I think we had a really good car when we unloaded. Our test here went really well, but at the same time, (race engineer) Allen [McDonald] and Bryan have been together for a short amount of time. The rain didn't help us yesterday because the more we are on track the better. I think that showed a little in our qualifying result. I think every time we were able to get on the track we just got better and better. The biggest key is for Bryan to feel confident and the team and the car and I think he does."
