Kanaan places Team 7-Eleven entry fourth on Texas grid
FT. WORTH, Texas. (June 5, 2003) -- Team 7-Eleven driver Tony Kanaan added to his string of top five qualifying performances Thursday at Texas Motor Speedway, putting the #11 Team 7-Eleven Dallara/Honda/Firestone fourth on the grid for Saturday night's Indy Racing League (IRL) IndyCar^Ù Series race.
Kanaan, who has already claimed two poles in 2003, turned a lap of 217.149 miles per hour to claim his starting spot on the outside of row two. In five events this season, Kanaan has not started outside the top four and owns an average starting spot of 2.0.
Two more Andretti Green Racing drivers will join Kanaan in Saturday's field. Bryan Herta, who is subbing for the injured Dario Franchitti, qualified ninth at 215.578 miles per hour, while rookie Dan Wheldon timed in 13th with a lap of 214.975 miles per hour.
Chip Ganassi Racing teammates Tomas Scheckter and Scott Dixon swept the front row starting positions Thursday night, circling the 1.5-mile high-banked oval at speeds of 219.300 and 218.654 miles per hour, respectively. Tora Takagi qualified third at 218.027 miles per hour to grab the third starting spot. Felipe Giaffone rounded out the top five with a speed of 216.755 miles per hour.
Two practice sessions are slated for Friday afternoon at Texas in preparation for Saturday's 200-lap race, which is set to go green at 7:21 p.m. (CDT) and will be televised live on ESPN.
TONY KANAAN, #11 TEAM 7-ELEVEN DALLARA/HONDA/FIRESTONE:
"We did what we could. I was flat-out. It's disappointing, for sure, but I think we'll be a lot better in the race.
"It will be a lot of fun Saturday night. It's a long race and starting position really isn't going to mean all that much. It will be my first time racing at night, which will be really fun, too. Hopefully, we'll put on a good show for the fans."

KIM GREEN, PRESIDENT, ANDRETTI GREEN RACING:
"I'm not overly excited with where we qualified. Obviously, we've been used to starting right up front with all our race cars, so tonight is a little disappointing. We had minimal practice (due to rain) and this is the first time we've raced here. But, we had a pretty good test here in May, so we're going to concentrate tomorrow on honing a very, very good race setup."
"I'm confident. We've got good race cars, great pit crews and obviously, have very, very good drivers. It will be a tough race -- a hard-fought race. But,I think we've got a chance to win Saturday night. If we don't do that, then we need to collect the most points we can."
