INDIANAPOLIS, March 30, 1999 - Stan Wattles and Donnie Beechler entered the Indianapolis 500 on March 26, as both seek to make their second career start in the Greatest Spectacle in Racing on May 30. Wattles, from Sewall's Point, Fla., is the second driver-owner to enter this year's classic at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Robby Gordon, an owner-driver in CART, entered March 16. Wattles is the first full-time driver-owner in the Pep Boys Indy Racing League to submit an entry. The entry deadline is midnight April 9. Wattles will drive the #19 Metro Racing Systems-NCLD Dallara/Aurora/Goodyear. His backup car will be a Riley & Scott/Aurora/Goodyear. Glen Blakely is the chief mechanic. "It's very exciting to be entered into the Indianapolis 500 once again, it truly is the Greatest Spectacle in Racing," Wattles said. "It's nice to be going back as a veteran. It really takes some of the pressure off, knowing what to expect. "We didn't have such a great showing there last year, but we've been working hard during the offseason in hopes of finishing the 500-mile event." Wattles finished 28th, one spot better than his starting position, as a rookie at the Speedway in 1998. He was involved in a five-car accident on Lap 48, ending his race. Beechler, from Springfield, Ill., will drive the #98 Cahill Racing-Firestone-Oldsmobile-Dallara Dallara/Aurora/Firestone. Kevin Hertle is the chief mechanic. USAC open-wheel racing standout Beechler, from Springfield, Ill., finished 32nd last year after engine problems ended his race on Lap 34. Both drivers are expected to participate in the Indianapolis 500 Open Test on April 8-11 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
