SCHECKTER'S EXCITING RUN LEADS VISION RACING IN QUALIFYING FOR ST. PETERSBURG
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- The sun-soaked Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg street course was host to a great deal of slides, bumps, crashes and most of all, speed, this afternoon as qualifying for the second IndyCar Series race of the 2007 season is complete.
Sharing in some of that speed and bumping was Vision Racing driver Tomas Scheckter in the No. 2 Dallara/Honda/Firestone. Leading his teammates, Scheckter's qualifying lap around the 1.8-mile, 14-turn circuit included a stamping of his right-rear Firestone Firehawk tire against the turn 10 wall. Scheckter was still able to continue on at a blistering pace to take 8th position on the starting grid for tomorrow's race.
It is the third straight year Scheckter has started from the eighth spot at the Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg. In addition, he's essentially picking up where he left off last weekend at Homestead-Miami Speedway where he finished in the eighth position. Scheckter's eighth place qualifying attempt is the team's highest qualifying run thus far in 2007.
Putting together one of his better laps of the weekend, teammate Ed Carpenter was just the second car out to qualify and will start from the 16th spot in the 100-lap race. He will pilot the No. 20 Vision Racing Dallara/Honda/Firestone for just the second time at St. Petersburg.
A.J. Foyt IV qualified just behind Carpenter in the 17th spot, driving the No. 22 Vision Racing Dallara/Honda/Firestone. It will Foyt's second and best finish at St. Petersburg.
Staying out of trouble, running good laps and letting the race come to them are the Vision Racing driver's top priorities for the race which is set to start, Sunday, April 1st at 2:30 p.m. (EDT).
Qualifying/Practice Results and Quotes:
Tomas Scheckter -- No. 2 Vision Racing Dallara/Honda/Firestone
"I didn't put the best lap together and I don't feel like I ever have on these one-lap qualifyings. Hitting the wall was a pity, but we'll go out and put a good race set up on it and be ready to go tomorrow. We've got a good car so I'm looking forward to it."
Ed Carpenter -- No. 20 Vision Racing Dallara/Honda/Firestone
"I went a little bit quicker on that lap, but I really wanted to get down into the 63's (seconds) for qualifying. We'll take and see what we can do in the race. This single-lap qualifing is difficult and this is probably one of the better jobs I have done in this single-lap format. The car is capable of being well into the 63's (seconds) or below, I'm just still a little off. but, it's all about tomorrow and just running a nice consistent race and staying out of trouble."
A.J. Foyt IV -- No. 22 Vision Racing Dallara/Honda/Firestone
"I'm very disappointed with how qualifying went because we were a second slower than what we did in practice this morning. The track is a little bit more difficult to race on right now as the conditions are slick, but above all we just didn't have a great lap. We've got a long race so we'll just go out there, be consistent and focus on finishing the race."
