Panther Prepares for St. Pete Street Race
St. Petersburg, Fla. -- Panther drivers Tomas Scheckter and Tomas Enge returned to their racing roots on Friday, as the Indy Racing League prepared for its first non-oval race in history on the streets of St. Petersburg. Both Scheckter and Enge climbed the motorsports ladder on the European road course circuits en route to a seat in Panther's Chevrolets. It's that experience they hope will propel them into victory lane on Sunday afternoon.
Enge was tops among the Panther drivers, and posted a top lap of 101.070 mph, 1:04:1141 seconds. He turned a total of 38 laps on the day, and his speed ranked ninth on the overall speed chart. Scheckter fought off the rust after spending the past four years on the all-oval IndyCar Series circuit, and finished with a best lap speed of 100.292 mph, 4:04.6114 seconds. Scheckter finished 14th, and completed a total of 42 laps.
Qualifications will take place tomorrow at 2:45 p.m. (EST), and the race begins at 3:45 p.m. (EST) on Sunday.
"I really enjoyed today. It was a lot of fun to be back on a road course. I had a big grin inside my helmet that no one could see. It was a good day for the Pennzoil Panther team. We're just working on the car and fine tuning it. There's more to come out of the Chevy engine the chassis also. I'm looking forward to tomorrow, we'll be good."
"Today was very good and we are progressing every day. It's fun, and it has been a long time since I've raced at a road course. It's been at least a year since I was driving on a street course, and I enjoy it out here. And even if it doesn't seem like it, we're improving each day, and today we focused on race setup. Now we want to qualify our RockStar car well tomorrow and finish the race very strong on Sunday."
