Matsuura Sixth Fastest in Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg Practice

Kosuke Matsuura started off strong in his second visit to the streets of St. Petersburg, posting the sixth-fastest time in IndyCar Series opening practice for Sunday's Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg. Matsuura made significant gains in the morning two-hour session, but brushed the wall with a short time remaining and was not able to return to the track. Changes to the #55 Panasonic ARTA Dallara/Honda/Firestone for the afternoon 30-minute session paid big dividends with Matsuura ending that session in the top five.

The results of today's combined practice sessions will set the qualifying order for tomorrow. Matsuura is looking to keep up his pace as the six fastest cars in single-car qualifying advance to the Firestone top-six shootout to set the first three rows of the grid.

Matsuura displayed his road racing skills last season, capturing sixth-place finishes at Infineon and Watkins Glen. At St. Petersburg, he retired from the race with gearbox problems while running in fifth place with only five laps to go. Matsuura is currently sixth in the championship standings.

Kosuke Matsuura, #55 Panasonic ARTA Dallara/Honda/Firestone:

"This was a good first day for us. We had too much understeer in the morning and then I brushed the wall towards the end of the practice session before I put my second set of new tires. That ended our session and was a big mistake for me, and I apologized to all of my mechanics. We changed a few things for the second session and made a huge improvement -- almost a second from the first session. We set quite a good time, and I have a lot of confidence with this car for tomorrow's qualifying. My goal is to get into the Firestone top-six qualifying."
