Canadian Club's Franchitti Finishes Fifth at Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (April 1, 2007) - In a race filled with difficulties, Canadian Club driver Dario Franchitti finished fifth at the Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg Sunday on the temporary street circuit in St. Petersburg, Fla.
On the first lap of the race, Franchitti and teammate Tony Kanaan made contact and Franchitti went down a lap due to repairs needing to be made to the left front of the car. Franchitti was forced to bring the car back into the pits on the very next lap to allow the team to make additional repairs. On the second stop, he received a drive-through penalty for speeding on pit lane in an attempt to remain only one lap behind the leaders. A second full course caution a third of the way through the race allowed Franchitti to remain on the track and return to the lead lap. Franchitti suffered additional problems when he lost the cooling mechanism in the brakes half way through the race.
Helio Castroneves captured the win in the Honda Grand Prix and Scott Dixon earned the runner-up finish. Teammates Kanaan and Marco Andretti finished third and fourth, respectively.
Dario Franchitti, #27 Canadian Club Dallara/Honda/Firestone:
"I have to thank the Canadian Club crew for fixing the car. We had an unfortunate incident on the first lap because we had some understeer on cold tires. TK came around the outside and we came together. We'll just put it down to racing. The guys did a great job putting the car back together. The main thing was that the last 50 laps, we lost the cooling in the brakes and I had to time it into the corners. I was in trouble. The car wasn't 100 percent after the incident, but the guys did a great job getting it as straight as possible. The main thing is that the guys didn't give up. I really just want to thank the Canadian Club crew."
John Anderson, Race Strategist, #27 Canadian Club Dallara/Honda/Firestone:
"It was a great effort for the entire Canadian Club team throughout the weekend. The cards were somewhat stacked against us and some of it was our fault but the guys came through. Dario drove a terrific race. He kept his mind on the job. We were running out of brakes at the end yet he was still setting quick laps so we are thinking about disconnecting them for the next race because they only slow you down anyway. It was a great team effort and a great drive by Dario."
