IRL: St. Pete: AGR, Dan Wheldon preview

#26 Klein Tools/Jim Beam Dallara/Honda/Firestone driver Dan Wheldon

Dan Wheldon on the Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg:

"It's going to be a big race for everyone at Andretti Green Racing. Everybody has been putting a lot of work into the event, so it's important that we do well. I think it adds a little bit of pressure. But, at the open test on the Homestead road course, the Klein Tools/Jim Beam car was very, very competitive. We've got to continue to work hard to develop our setup over the weekend and perhaps adjust it for the street course, but I'm very confident in my engineer and the boys on my car. I think there's a good chance the Klein Tools/Jim Beam car could be in victory circle."

Dan Wheldon Facts

Wheldon led the first 72 laps at Phoenix International Raceway and finished in sixth place.

In the 2005 season-opening race at Homestead-Miami Speedway, Wheldon picked up his fourth career IndyCar Series victory in dominating fashion by leading 158 of 200 laps.

Wheldon ranks second in the IndyCar Series championship standings, just six points behind leader Sam Hornish Jr.

The Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg, a 1.8-mile and 14-turn course, will be the first street-course race in IndyCar Series history.

Wheldon finished the 2004 season in second place in the IndyCar Series points championship with 533 points; the second-highest point total in IndyCar Series history.

During the 2004 season, Wheldon recorded the first three IndyCar Series victories of his career. He led 192 laps to win at Twin Ring Motegi, started from 20th position before driving to the win at Richmond and he won the final IndyCar Series event at Nazareth Speedway.

Wheldon has two career IndyCar Series poles, earning them at Phoenix and Twin Ring Motegi in 2004.

Wheldon holds the IndyCar Series record for consecutive top-four finishes with eight.

John Anderson, Race Engineer, #26 Klein Tools/Jim Beam Dallara/Honda/Firestone on the Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg:

"With this being the first road race in IndyCar Series history, we think it's great and are looking forward to the race. We know this will be a quality race because of the association with Honda and Andretti Green Promotions, so we plan on being up near the top from the very first practice session. We're going to be up there pushing it."
