Wheldon collects second top-five finish of rookie season
MADISON, Ill. (August 10, 2003) -- Klein Tools/Jim Beam rookie driver Dan Wheldon scored his second top-five finish of the season in the Emerson Indy 250 Sunday at Gateway International Raceway.
Wheldon started from the outside of the sixth row in the Klein Tools/Jim Beam Dallara/Honda/Firestone and slowly worked his way into the top-ten. Wheldon entered the pits in ninth on his second stop and the Klein Tools/Jim Beam crew put on an outstanding performance to get him out of the pits in sixth. The team claimed another spot on their third and final pit stop and Wheldon sailed home to a fifth-place finish.
Helio Castroneves claimed his first victory of the year ahead of Wheldon's teammate Tony Kanaan. Kanaan's second place finish moves him back atop the Indy Racing League (IRL) IndyCar^Ù Series point standings, seven points ahead of today's third place finisher Gil de Ferran. Wheldon's other teammate Bryan Herta was involved in a pit lane accident on lap 40 and finished 21st.
The IRL IndyCar Series moves to Kentucky Speedway a week from today for the Belterra Casino Indy 300. Round 12 of the 2003 championship will be shown live at 2 p.m. (EDT) on ABC Sports.
Dan Wheldon, #26 Klein Tools/Jim Beam
"Tony Cotman (team manager) did a great job with the strategy today. He is unbelievable and that made my day easier because I always seemed to be in clean air. We had a good balance for the car in the race and the Klein Tools/Jim Beam crew did an excellent job on the pit stops today."
Tony Cotman, Team Manager, Klein Tools/Jim Beam
"I'm pretty happy for Dan because this team needed a good finish. It was a great experience for him on a short track because we have struggled a little bit. I'm really happy with the job the guys did in the pits today, and that is key because we took some chances and that made up a lot of ground for us on the track."
