Helio Castroneves won his second Indianapolis 500 when a final lap shoot-out with Paul Tracy was foiled by a caution caused by Laurent Redon. Once again Spiderman climbed the fence in celebration.

Motorsport.com will have a full report shortly.

Team Menard's third pitstop caused the most frightful incident in the race. Robby Gordon's vent hose hung up as he started to leave his pits. He stopped but there was some fuel spilled and as the crew was putting water on it, the top of the large fuel tank blew off. This was apparently caused by fire going up the vent hose into the tank. There were no apparent injuries in the incident, but the team lost all their fuel for the remainder of the race.

IRL officials announced that Gordon's Menards team will be allowed to move to the Greg Ray pits and use the fuel there for the rest of the race.

Felipe Giaffone also had a vent hose stick on his car, but it caused no fuel leak or fire; however, part of the vent remained in the car until the next pit stop.

On the restart, Tony Kanaan was leading when Burno Junqueira's engine blew, leaving oil on the track. The yellow did not come out in time to keep leader Tony Kanaan from running through it. He crashed into wall between turns three and four which is one area the SAFER Barrier is not located.

In an earlier incident, Greg Ray spun in turn four on lap 28, he was not injured, but a wheel did come loose in the crash.
