Sharp Second Fastest in Homestead Oval Open Test
Scott Sharp continued to impress in his first outing with Delphi Fernandez Racing, setting the second fastest time of the 20-car field as the IRL IndyCar® Series today concluded a one-day test on Homestead-Miami Speedway's 1.5-mile oval. The outing marked the end of the series' first Open Test of 2005, which also included two days of testing on the Homestead road course where Sharp was 11th-quickest overall.
Sharp, who logged 173 laps, was only 0.0343 seconds off the fastest time of the day set by fellow Honda driver Buddy Rice. Kosuke Matsuura, of sister team Super Aguri Fernandez Racing, was fourth quickest.
Delphi Fernandez Racing will continue its pre-season testing with the IndyCar Series Open Test at Phoenix International Raceway on February 9 and10.
Scott Sharp, #8 Delphi Panoz/Honda/Firestone:
"The car was great. It was very strong as I expected. Obviously, it's a setup that this team had perfected all last year. I knew I was getting in a good car. I felt comfortable right away. We just had to play with the setup a little bit for the track conditions. There were enough cars here at the Open Test that we were really able to start doing a lot of 'big pack' running. That really helped in getting the car to handle well.
"I am excited for the next test at Phoenix. This is a track that has been love and hate for me. I either led the race or won the race there on three different occasions -- '96, '97 and '98 -- and have just struggled with the car from then on. Dealing with a loose car on a short oval is not fun. I am real excited to go there with the Fernandez team and their package, and I am expecting a lot better results."
