Firestone Tire Performance Summary: Firestone paired a new right-side tire compound this weekend with the same left-side configuration that was used at Richmond in 2006, in an effort to deliver more grip for the drivers. That added grip was evident in the race pace that saw many more race laps of 17.5 seconds or less than a year ago.
From Dario Franchitti, #27 Canadian Club Andretti Green Racing Dallara/ Honda/Firestone: "We put the Firestone tires through a lot tonight and we really pushed them to the limit all night, but I was still able to hold everybody off and win the race."
From Joe Barbieri, Manager, Firestone Racing: "Racing at Richmond is always a crapshoot, but in general we're pleased with the performance of this new Firehawk tire specification tonight. The race pace was certainly faster than last year, yet the drivers seemed to have better control of their cars and there were fewer incidents than in the past. We think some of that is attributable to the increased grip they had tonight from their Firestone tires. Congratulations again to Dario and the Andretti Green crew; they're certainly hitting full stride right now. But there's still nearly a half-season of racing left, and we all know too well how unpredictable the IndyCar Series can be."
Firestone Performance Award: Not surprisingly, Dario Franchitti earned the $10,000 Firestone Performance Award for leading lap 143 tonight. The award commemorates Firestone's status as the only tire supplier to compete in every IndyCar Series race in history. Tonight's SunTrust Indy Challenge was race number 143 in league history.
