FRANCHITTI RACES TO SECOND-PLACE FINISH AT RICHMOND
RICHMOND, Va. (June 25, 2005) - ArcaEx driver Dario Franchitti battled to a second-place finish during Saturday night's running of the Indy Racing League® IndyCar® Series SunTrust Indy Challenge at Richmond International Raceway.
Franchitti started the event from fifth place and maintained his position among the top-five throughout the early portion of the event, moving into first place on lap 89 when the ArcaEx team elected to stay out while other contenders made pit stops. The strategy paid off, as Franchitti either led or was second over the remaining 160 laps.
He made a final bid to catch and pass eventual winner Helio Castroneves in the final 15 laps, but as he entered Turn 1, Jimmy Kite moved into Franchitti's line, stealing any momentum the Scotsman may have had.
Castroneves went on to earn the victory. Patrick Carpentier was third, Tomas Scheckter fourth, and teammate Dan Wheldon placed fifth.
Through seven events, Franchitti has 187 points, residing fifth in the driver point standings, but is just 11 points shy of fourth place.
Next up for Franchitti and the rest of the IndyCar Series teams is the Argent Mortgage Indy 300 at Kansas Speedway on Sunday, July 3. The event will be televised live by ESPN beginning at 1:30 p.m. (EDT). It can also be heard live by XM Satellite Radio subscribers on Extreme XM, channel 152.
Dario Franchitti, #27 ArcaEx Dallara/Honda/Firestone:
"That was all we had from the ArcaEx car. Helio (Castroneves) just had a little more than we did but we pushed as hard as we could. I thought in traffic we were a little stronger than him and I had a run on him when Jimmy Kite came down on me and almost took me out of the game. So that was the end of it, but we're quite happy with second place and we'll keep working at it and we'll win one of these things pretty soon."
Kyle Moyer, General Manager, Andretti Green Racing:
"We tried to beat the fastest car out there today since we weren't the fastest car and it didn't work out for us. We would have liked to have won the race, but all in all, it was a great run for us. Dario drove a great race, the crew gave us fantastic stops and it was a really good night for the #27 ArcaEx team."
