FOUNTAIN, Colo., Aug. 28 - Scott Harrington posted his best qualifying effort ever in Pep Boys Indy Racing League competition Saturday at Pikes Peak International Raceway to earn the fourth starting spot for Sunday's Colorado Indy 200 presented by Deloitte & Touche. Behind the wheel of the CertainTeed Dallara Aurora #66, Harrington's best lap in qualifying was his first of two, which he turned in only 20.460 seconds for an average speed of 175.996 mph. Showing his great consistency, his second lap took only 0.005 of a second longer. The competition in the Pep Boys IRL series is so tight that the top two qualifiers, Greg Ray and Sam Schmidt, turned identical laps of 20.424 seconds or 176.263 mph, just .036 of a second faster than Harrington's best lap. Ray got the pole because of the luck of the draw, since he was the 15th driver out in qualifying and Schmidt was 17th. Mark Dismore earned the third starting spot with a lap at 20.455 seconds or 175.996 mph. Following Harrington in fourth was Davey Hamilton in fifth with a lap at 20.564 seconds or 175.063 mph. Earlier in the day in practice Harrington topped the charts with a lap at 20.384 seconds or 176.609 mph, which would have been good enough for the pole had it occurred a few hours later. Harrington was also fastest in practice Friday. His previous best qualifying effort occurred at the last race, when he qualified fifth in the event at Dover, Del. Aug. 1. "The CertainTeed car was great again; we just lost a little bit from this morning," Harrington said. "With the extremely competitive nature of the Pep Boys Indy Racing League, we just slipped a couple of hundredths and that took us off the top of the list for the first time this weekend. "On my last lap the car was sliding around a little bit, but when you're playing a game of hundredths of seconds, that's the way things turn out sometimes," he added. "I had the fastest car here in June and I don't intend to be anything but that tomorrow. We'll put the race set-up on now, make some minor changes, and we'll be ready to go. "Fourth is the best qualifying effort ever for the CertainTeed team, so we're pleased and we're really looking forward to a great race tomorrow."
