Panoz G Force Teams to Try for Trifecta at Pikes Peak
FOUNTAIN, CO, 20 August 2004 - Panoz G Force teams have captured the last two rounds of the Indy Racing League's IndyCar Series schedule and come to the edge of the Rocky Mountains to try for three in a row. "We concentrated on our speedway car since the beginning of the season," chief designer Simon Marshall explained, "but we've developing our short oval package all season as well."
In advance of the two final short oval contests ol the season, this weekend's Honda Indy 225 at the 1-mile Pikes Peak International Raceway and next week's Firestone Indy 225 on a very different, road-course-like type of mile oval in Nazareth, PA, Panoz G Force engineers and designers have been hard at work to offer successful setups. "Our focus changed to short ovals for the Pikes Peak and Nazareth weekends," detailed Nicholas Alcock, chief aerodynamicist. "We think the aero package looks good."
Continuing to look for the competitive edge while fielding seven of 22 regular IndyCar Series entrants, "We've not been sleeping," Marshall admitted. "We've been working on new parts specifically for this race."
With five events remaining in a 16-race campaign, Panoz G Force entrants have won four, including the 88th Indianapolis 500 Mile Race for the second consecutive time. As the sole chassis designed and built in the United States for IndyCar Series competition, the seven Panoz G Force entrants have also garnered top-five finishes in all but one race and have six podium appearances to date.
"I think we showed our short-track chops at Milwaukee," noted Rahal Letterman Racing driver Buddy Rice of his #15 Argent Mortgage/Pioneer Panoz G Force/Honda/Firestone racer that currently lies second in the points, accounting for three victories including Indy, along with five MBNA Pole Positions "I'm pretty excited about Pikes Peak and Nazareth since our recent small oval test (at Nazareth). We were second at Milwaukee and the setup now seems very good for the short ovals," Rice declared.
This weekend's Honda Indy 225 is a two-day meeting, with practice and qualifying taking place on Saturday and racing starting at 3:30PM EDT Sunday afternoon. The race airs live on ABC.
