Field Set by Practice Speeds After Rain Cancels Qualifying for Pikes Peak IRL Race

FOUNTAIN, Colo., Aug. 21, 2004 - After a downpour at Pikes Peak International Raceway washed out qualifying for Sunday's Honda Indy 225, the starting grid was determined by practice speeds in accordance with IRL rules.

Felipe Giaffone was the fastest Chevrolet-powered driver in the two practice sessions that were completed before the rain arrived. Giaffone will start the Team Purex/Dreyer & Reinbold Racing from the 12th spot with a practice speed of 169.705 mph. Tomas Scheckter will start Pennzoil Panther Racing's Chevrolet Dallara in 13th (169.424 mph). Jaques Lazier is the 14th qualifier in Patrick Racing's Chevy (168.917 mph) and Townsend Bell is 15th in Panther Racing's Menards/Johns Manville Chevrolet Dallara (168.388 mph). Red Bull Cheever Racing teammates Alex Barron and Ed Carpenter are 16th and 20th respectively.

Tony Kanaan will start on the pole in a Honda Dallara with a 174.311 mph practice speed.

The Honda Indy 225 will start at 3:45 p.m. EDT on Sunday, August 22. The 225-lap race will be televised live on ABC.
