Rain Cancels Qualifying

Fountain, CO (August 21, 2004) Rain poured down in the mountains of Pikes Peak International Raceway canceling qualifying for tomorrow's Pikes Peak Honda Indy 225. Indy Racing League IndyCar Series drivers will start on the grid in order of today's combined practice session times.

Red Bull Cheever Racing's Alex Barron in the No. 51 Chevy-powered Dallara will start in 17th position for the 225-lap race. Barron's most recent race on the 1-mile oval at PPIR was in 2002.

"The cars and track are really different now from when I last raced here in 2002," Barron explained. "The track was a lot bumpier then and we're a lot lighter on downforce now. It's unfortunate that we got rained out because the team and engineering staff had a really good plan for qualifying, but we'll just have to go out tomorrow morning during final practice and make the most of our time."

The No. 52 Red Bull Cheever Racing machine piloted by rookie Ed Carpenter will take the green flag from the 21st starting position.

"It's disappointing that we didn't have a chance to go out and qualify today," 23-year old Carpenter said. "I think we would have done better than our practice times. We worked a lot on race setup today, so we should be ready to go for tomorrow's race."

Tomorrow's Honda Indy 225 takes place at 3:45pm (EDT). Pikes Peak International Raceway is tucked away in the Rocky Mountains near Colorado Springs, CO at an elevation of 5, 357 feet.
