Franchitti starting 7th in return at Pikes Peak
FOUNTAIN, Colo. (June 14, 2003) -- Dario Franchitti will return to action tomorrow in the #27 Archipelago/Motorola Dallara/Honda Firestone at Pikes Peak International Raceway and will roll off from the seventh position after heavy thunderstorms cancelled qualifying and set the starting grid based on practice times.
Franchitti returned to the car today for the first time in 10 weeks after being sidelined by an injury. Franchitti and his crew worked on race setup for most of the two practice sessions. The Archipelago/Motorola team was able to get just a couple of qualifying simulations logged, but felt they had a car that would have qualified better than seventh if there had been a chance to qualify.
Franchitti's teammate Tony Kanaan will start from the pole tomorrow. It is Kanaan's fifth front row start in six races and third from the pole. Helio Castroneves will start second and Felipe Giaffone will start third. Rookie Dan Wheldon will start from the 13th position.
Dario Franchitti #27 Archipelago/Motorola Dallara/Honda/Firestone
"Today was a busy day because I had to get back up to speed myself. That slowed our development but it was nice to be back out there. We worked on the Archipelago/Motorola car's race setup in the morning session and then we found a pretty good qualifying setup this afternoon. Unfortunately, we ran out of gear. I think we could have been a lot closer to the front."
How are you feeling?
"I feel fine. When I come into the pits the muscle on the left side of my back tightens up but when I'm out on track I feel great. It's nice to be back with the team and running again."
