Schroeder Set for Second IRL Race March 23 at Phoenix

PHOENIX, March 14 - Jeret Schroeder of Vineland, N.J., is one of 22 Indy Racing League drivers slated to compete for a starting spot in the Phoenix 200 at Phoenix Int'l Raceway March 21-23.

He'll drive the McCormack Motorsports G-Force Olds Aurora No. 30, which is sponsored by Purity Farms, Sunnyside Foods, Alfa Laval, Team Losi and Goodyear.

The race will be broadcast live on the ABC Television Network next Sunday, March 23, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Eastern time, and can also be heard live over the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Radio Network.

The Phoenix 200 will be Schroeder's second start in an Indy car and the final tune-up for the Indy 500 May 25 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, the world's largest single-day sporting event. The 27-year-old driver is trying to become the first New Jersey resident to compete in the Memorial Day Classic in 14 years.

Schroeder ran 161 laps in practice last month on Phoenix's 1-mile oval. Unofficially, his top speed during that practice period was 157.825 mph.

He passed his IRL rookie test at Walt Disney World (Fla.) Speedway with flying colors in January, and then finished 14th in the race. It was Schroeder's first Indy car event ever, and he ran it with very little practice in a brand-new car which hadn't been on a race track before that week.

Schroeder comes to IRL competition after earning the 1995 U.S. Formula Ford 2000 national championship and finishing fifth in the SCCA Player's/Toyota Atlantic championship series in 1996. In addition to selected IRL races, he is competing in the full SCCA Kool/Toyota Atlantic series this year.

The schedule, which is subject to change, shows IRL practice on Friday, March 21, with sessions from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 2:45 p.m. to 3:45 p.m. local time. Another practice session will be held on Saturday, March 22 from 9 a.m. to 10:25 a.m., with time trials following from 12:15 p.m. to 1:45 p.m. A "happy hour" final practice session before the race is scheduled for 3:45 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday. Pre-race festivities on Sunday, March 23 begin at 1 p.m., with the 200-mile, 200-lap race scheduled to get the green flag at 2 p.m. local time, or 4 p.m. Eastern.
