Pennzoil Sponsors Indy Racing League Event at New Hampshire International Speedway --The Pennzoil 200
HOUSTON (April 22, 1997) - Pennzoil Products Company announced today it is sponsoring the Pennzoil 200, an Indy Racing League (IRL) event to be held August 17, 1997, at the New Hampshire International Speedway (NHIS) in Loudon, N.H. Pennzoil also sponsors the Pennzoil/VIP Discount Auto Parts Center NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series/Busch North/Featherlite Tripleheader races to be held at NHIS in May, and the NASCAR Busch North/Featherlite Doubleheader races to be held at NHIS in July. In addition, Pennzoil and Jiffy Lube International, Inc., a sister company, sponsor the NASCAR Winston Cup "Jiffy Lube 300," also held at NHIS in July. "The northeast is an important and growing market for Pennzoil, and this unique opportunity to sponsor another race at NHIS if very exciting," said Thomas E. Floyd, chief marketing officer for Pennzoil. "It's another opportunity for us to show our appreciation to our many thousands of loyal New England fans. It also allows our customers to promote the races locally to help their businesses." Leo Mehl, executive director of the IRL, also expressed excitement about the new sponsorship, which is in addition to Pennzoil's role as official motor oil of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS), the Indy 500 and the IRL. "We are pleased that Pennzoil is becoming the title sponsor at New Hampshire," Mehl said. "Pennzoil is a good friend to the IRL, playing a major role in television coverage and as oil supplier. This move strengthens and builds on our relationship." The Pennzoil 200 will be the IRL's second race at the NHIS. Last year's race was won by Scott Sharp. "We welcome our friends at Pennzoil in joining us for the August 17 Indy Racing League 200," said NHIS President Gary Bahre. "New England race fans expect the best from racing, and Pennzoil certainly meets that standard." The IRL starting field for the Pennzoil 200 will compete on the speedway's 1.058-mile oval course for 200 laps. The posted awards for the race include a purse of a minimum of $1 million. The race will be broadcast on ABC Sports and the IMS Radio Network. In addition to its involvement with the IRL and IMS, Pennzoil sponsors the Pagan Racing team and its IRL driver, Roberto Guerrero. Pennzoil sponsors teams in other circuits as well, including NASCAR and NHRA, and is the title sponsor of the Pennzoil World of Outlaws series. Pennzoil Products Company is a wholly owned subsidiary of Houston-based Pennzoil Company (NYSE:PZL), and its motor oil has been America's #1-selling brand for eleven consecutive years.
