Nazareth, PA (August 28, 2004) Red Bull Cheever Racing's Alex Barron qualified in 14th position for the Firestone Indy 225 at Nazareth Speedway.
Barron in the No. 51 Red Bull Cheever Racing entry used his Chevy-power to lap the one-mile track at 163.409 mph, earning the 14th fastest lap of the day.
"We were quicker in qualifying than we were in practice, so we're happy that we're improving," Barron explained. "We've had really good handling when we've been working on our race setup, so we're prepared for tomorrow's race. We just need to find a way to get a little bit more out of Turn 3 and we should be all set."
Teammate Ed Carpenter was unable to qualify after an incident in the morning practice session left insufficient time to prepare another race car for qualifying.
"We didn't qualify the No. 52 car today, so we'll start from the back of the grid and really have to work our way through the field during the race," Carpenter said. "I struggled yesterday during practice, but this morning's session was better and we made a lot of improvements. I'm just disappointed that we didn't get to qualify."
During the morning practice session, Carpenter's No. 52 Red Bull Cheever Racing machine made contact with the wall in Turn 3.
"Cold tires," Carpenter said upon exiting the car. "I was doing one last qualifying sim and was on cold tires. I just lost it and hit the wall."
The 23-year old rookie was checked and released from the infield medical center with no injuries. He was cleared to drive in tomorrow's race.
The Firestone Indy 225 airs live on ABC at 2 p.m. (EDT). The event at Nazareth Speedway is round 13 of 16 IRL races, and also marks the last event at the speedway before the historic venue is demolished.
